The Language of Personal Relationship with Jesus by R. LaMon Brown

  • What exactly does it mean to be related to God in a personal way?
  • What does it mean to have a personal relationship with God?

In the Christian Century (September 6, 2011) John Suk wrote an article entitled “A friend in Jesus?: Faith is not a personal relationship”. In the article Suk reacted negatively to the popular language among Evangelicals and others that call for and affirm a person relationship with Jesus or God in this life.

A spirited discussion arose among the Trinity Group. Some had read the article, while others simply responded in the context of our discussion carried out exclusively by email.

Among the group two points of sympathy emerged in terms of Suk’s thesis. Some noted that many people do not understand what they mean when they use the personal relationship language. It is used unreflectively. Continue reading
